“Sister Midnight” follows Uma (Radhika Apte), a newlywed who moves into a grimy Mumbai slum with her husband, Gopal (Ashok Pathak). Through vivid imagery, the film exposes the stark divide between Mumbai’s towering skyscrapers and its squalid, reeking slums, echoing the adage: in Mumbai, always look up, never down.
Uma, the eccentric protagonist, struggles to adapt to city life. Previously married before reconnecting with her childhood friend Gopal—whom she hadn’t seen since she was eight—she lacks basic domestic skills. She snores loudly, eats like a beast when she consumes regular food like dal-chawal (which she can barely digest), and has no manners. Her bizarre behavior stems from a dark secret: Uma craves animal and bird blood, killing and hiding their bandaged corpses in her home.
Her oddities make her an outcast in the slum, not because her neighbors know of her killings, but because she’s utterly undomesticated. Only one neighbor (Chhaya Kadam) shows her any kindness. Tragedy strikes when Gopal dies during an intimate moment, and Uma keeps his rotting corpse in their home. When another neighbor grows suspicious, Uma resorts to murder to protect her secret.
