Costao 2025 Movie Review

In 1990s Goa, the film unfolds without any visual or linguistic nod to its era. Its low-budget constraints are evident, yet it leans on the real-life hero’s grit to carry it through. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, however, shares no chemistry with his on-screen wife, played by the skilled Priya Bapat, whose vibrant presence from City of Dreams is here confined to the stereotypical role of a bureaucrat’s supportive spouse. Even the heartfelt bond between Costao Fernandes and his daughter, the story’s narrator, feels underdeveloped.

The narrative drowns in clichés, trapping Costao as a one-dimensional hero. His dialogue, more suited to a propaganda pamphlet than a battle-scarred fighter, stifles any chance for growth. The oppressive atmosphere stems from the predictable strokes of valor painted onto Costao’s character. Forced to deliver lines that pair “duty” with “beauty,” Nawazuddin struggles to convey authentic outrage against a suffocating system. He manages a flicker of conviction, but the film itself falls far short of triumph.
