Retro 2025 Movie Review

Paarivel Kannan, known as Paari (Suriya), is the loyal right-hand man of gangster Thilakan (Joju George), who raised him like a son. Paari’s life takes a turn when he steals a haul of valuable ‘goldfish’ and plans to leave his criminal past behind to marry his love, veterinarian Rukmini (Pooja Hegde), promising her a lawful life. However, their peace is shattered when an enraged Thilakan storms Paari’s wedding, demanding the return of the stolen goldfish, unleashing chaos. Forced to fight back, Paari lands in jail, and Rukmini vanishes from his life. During his five-year imprisonment, a heartbroken Paari searches for Rukmini, eventually tracing her to an island off the Andamans.

Meanwhile, Thilakan, still furious and hunting for his goldfish, pursues Paari to Black Island. The island, however, is plagued by its own troubles, ruled by the oppressive Mirasdar (Nasser) and his son Michael. The story unfolds as Paari confronts the challenges of Black Island, fights to reunite with Rukmini, and faces the relentless pursuit of Thilakan and Michael.

The collaboration between director Karthik Subbaraj and Suriya sparked immense excitement, marking their first project together. As anticipated, Subbaraj crafts a narrative that plays to Suriya’s strengths—action and romance—though the balance tilts unevenly. Retro tells a familiar tale of a gangster seeking redemption through love, leaving viewers questioning whether Paari will succeed.

The film’s first half is a strong setup, introducing Paari, Thilakan, and Rukmini with a standout 15-minute action and dance sequence that showcases the crew’s technical prowess and the actors’ finesse. This segment is a highlight, brimming with energy and precision. However, the momentum falters in the second half as the screenplay becomes uneven, particularly with the introduction of a comedy track and the Black Island arc, which disrupt the narrative’s flow.
